African Studies: Language, Arts, Philosophy, Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)


The B.A. programme offers an internationally oriented and interdisciplinary approach to African studies. It is unique in Germany for its strong humanities focus, placing an emphasis on African languages as essential gateways to understanding African societies, cultures, and knowledge systems. Students engage with a wide range of cultural expressions, including literature, philosophy, visual and performing arts, and audiovisual media.

The M.A. programme incorporates Linguistics, Literary Studies, Islamic studies, Global African Arts and Afrophone philosophy into a comprehensive study of African verbal and visual arts. It treats languages and diverse media as unique entry points to African traditions and knowledge systems. A multilingual perspective reflects the diversity of global societies, engaging students with cutting-edge research on themes like translation, digital narratives, and the aesthetics of African film.
